Maximilian Foster. In the Forest: Tales of Wood-Life, New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1901, illustrated facing p. 38.

DescriptionHead of one deer looking straight at viewer. Misnamed in book caption. Depicts the buck in his later years, not as a yearling. Curatorial Remarks
Noted in a review that this illustration is incorrectly titled. "The illustration of nature books has come to be a fine art, – indeed, a very special fine art. . . . The illustrations by Rungius for 'In the Forest' are very spirited, full of action, and wonderfully life-like, though the one entitled 'The Yearling Buck' is evidently incorrectly named.” “The Innings of the Animals,” Charles Atwood Kofoid, The Dial, December 1, 1901, v31, n371, p. 439-440.
