DescriptionWhetzel #10. prehistoric Native American art, This particular vessel features a butterfly or moth-like creature, its wings outstretched and its head held in profile. The style of this bowl is typical of Mimbres figurative ceramics; the figure is usually portrayed in a stylized yet identifiable manner, distinct from the abstracted geometric figures seen in similarly dated Ancestral Pueblo ceramics. Heavy geometric decorative elements are absent, leaving the black form of the figure to stand in stark and haunting simplicity against the white background.
