Glenbow catalogue quotes a February 11, 1931 Rungius letter to the original owner of the painting, Sen. Frederic Walcott: "The moose is knocking his horn against the tree. The landscape is Russell Mountain, Yukon Territory. The picture was painted about 1906, after my trip with Sheldon up the Pelly and McMillan."
We have a copy of the letter from Glenbow Archives.
Letter also says: "I sold the painting to a Mr. Lindle of Hoboken, manufacturer and art collector. After his death, Mrs. Lindle kept his collection intact for about 15 years, when it was sold at auction.
I heard that my painting was bought by the art dealer Schultheiss for $950.000 and Douthitt probably got the painting from him. he sold another, a much earlier one, for $1700.00 in November."
